Last Friday, our Managing Director, Lauren McCluskey, attended an Expert Witness Training Day in Manchester, hosted by Gerard McDermott KC. The seminar, “Enhancing Expertise with McDermott KC Law: Expert Witness Training for Medical and Healthcare Professionals”, brought together leading voices in the field to share invaluable insights.
The day was designed to help experts strengthen their confidence, credibility, and effectiveness in legal settings. Sessions explored practical strategies for refining courtroom skills, navigating legal procedures, and presenting expert evidence with clarity and authority in high-value personal injury litigation.
Reflecting on the experience, Lauren highlighted several key learnings. Her work reflects a strong appreciation for the responsibilities inherent in the expert witness role, and the need to provide opinions that are not only credible but also genuinely assist the court. The discussions underscored the importance of understanding precisely what lawyers require from expert evidence, and how recent case law continues to shape those expectations.
Finally, the training emphasised the value of being able to justify recommendations under the scrutiny of cross-examination, an area where preparation and clarity of thought can make all the difference.
“The Enhancing Expertise with McDermott KC Law was a fantastic conference and full of valuable insights for both seasoned experts and ones new to the world of acting as an expert witness. Gerard, as were all the speakers, were engaging and genuinely interested in practically supporting all the experts in attendance to improve their ability to deliver their expert opinions to the court, to the standards expected.
An added bonus was the high-quality materials that were provided to all attendees- including a really good practical guide to being an expert witness that we could take away and reflect on. More days like these please!” – Lauren McCluskey
